Check the size of the
Piston ring gap first, using a height gauge. Put the following piston rings in order: oil ring expander, lower oil ring side rail, upper oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and lastly No. 1 upper piston ring. Install the oil ring expander first, set the side rail into the gap between the piston ring groove and the oil ring, make the rail stay secure by holding it there and push it down until it is properly positioned, not using a piston ring expander. Next, place the lower side rail, then install the upper side rail to line up with the No. 2 piston ring and place the manufacturer's I.D. mark (dot) up at the top of the piston, since the No. 1 and No. 2 rings differ in their cross section. Put a ring expander into place and install the No. 2 piston ring and then the No. 1 piston ring. Make certain that the oil ring expander gap, both side rail end gaps, piston ring #2 end gap and piston ring #1 end gap are set as instructed to allow ideal oil circulation and proper fit.
