The Ignition Lock Cylinder in Chrysler Cirrus specifically provides the primary purpose of allowing starting of the car's engine by use of a key. This feature is contained in the ignition switch that provides power by the battery to the relevant circuits whenever the right key is inserted. This generation Chrysler Cirrus has a conventional column-mounted ignition lock cylinder that enhances security of the car and minimizes theft, something set in place in the 1970's. Year after year, the Chrysler Cirrus cars have relied on high security features, and one of them has been the coded ignition key that has to interface with the car's computer and if the car recognizes the coded key only then can the engine be started. Still, the Ignition Lock Cylinder has become much more sophisticated over the years and have been known to become worn and malfunctions causing Engine Drive-Ability issues or for the engine to shut down unexpectedly.

Chrysler Cirrus Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Ignition Lock Cylinder on Chrysler Cirrus?
    A:
First, disconnect the negative cable from the auxiliary jumper terminal to service and repair the ignition lock cylinder. Tilt back the upper shroud enough to see the lower shroud, then pull it out of the way to gain access to the retaining tab. After putting the key cylinder into the RUN position, push the retaining tab and remove it. To install, put the key into the lock cylinder, turn it to the RUN position and allow the retaining tab on the cylinder to be pushed down. Be sure to line up the shaft at the end of the lock cylinder with the socket on the end of the housing and make sure the housing is set in the RUN position. Guide the lock cylinder over the grooves and move it in all the way until you notice the tab coming through the hole. After turning the key, put it in the OFF position and then remove it. After that, place the shrouds back on the steering column and join the negative cable to the auxiliary battery terminal found on the shock tower.
