Chrysler Concorde Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Shift Cable for the 42LE Automatic Transmission on Chrysler Concorde?
    A:
First, unscrew the shift handle screw with the suitable wrench and then pull the shift handle off the assembly to access the floor shift for the 42LE automatic transmission. After that, uninstall the console bezel from your vehicle and remove the nut on the shift cable adjust lever. Take the retaining clip from the shift cable conduit bracket and remove the shifter cable from the cable attach stud. While the vehicle is up on the jack stands, take the cable out of the console's routing and lay it on the floor so it's easily available to pull later. Open the hood, pull the gearshift cable out of the bracket it is mounted on and finally take out the cable grommet from the firewall to remove the cable inside the vehicle. Get the car up on a hoist, remove the fill tube bracket from the transaxle and turn the fill tube to reveal the clamp. Pull the cable loose from the routing bracket, remove the nut holding it to the transaxle and move the cable away from the stud. Separate the shifter cable from the assembly at the transaxle and take the cable out from under the vehicle. Prior to installation, check that the transaxle lever is in "Park," fully at the back and that the park sprag is in place. Set the cable inside your vehicle and link the cable connection to the transaxle shift lever, being sure to use the washer on the mounting stud and secure it down with 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) of torque. Replace the fill tube to its normal position and put the bracket bolt in place. Put the "push pin" of the cable into the bracket, guide the transaxle shift cable through the opening in the dash, grease the grommet with synthetic oil and push the grommet into the hole on the panel. Pull the cable through the hole at the top of the throttle/gearshift cable bracket, guide it through the opening between the a/c duct and lower heat duct, thread it through the tube in the shifter conduit bracket and clip it to the pin for the cable connecting the shifter. Secure a new clip to the cable, tighten the adjustment nut and add the console bezel and shifter handle, pressing the shifter handle down and only after that, secure it with the screw tight. Don't forget to inspect the shifter and check if it works everywhere other than Neutral or Park and the starter engages only when the gear is set to Park or Neutral.
