Chrysler LHS CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Outer CV Boot on Chrysler LHS?
    A:
The first step to installing a new CV boot outer is to take out the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle. The first step is to remove the big clamp holding the CV joint sealing boot to the housing and the small clamp retaining the outer CV joint seal to the connecting piece. Push the outside boot over the boot clamp and let it go down the shaft connecting to the other boot. First, wipe down the area so you can work on the retaining ring, spread out the ears of the CV joint assembly to remove the snap ring and finally pull the outer CV joint off the interconnecting shaft. If the sealing boot failed, inspect the outer CV joint assembly and the interconnecting joint for too much wear. If there is wear on any parts, the assembly has to be replaced, since component pieces of the assembly are not serviceable. Put the seal boot you got included on the new shaft, then cover it with the outer CV joint assembly's sealing boot. Insert the shaft into the joint and push it along until the ring snaps into place in the groove. Insert one part of the moist grease from the seal boot package into the housing for your CV joint and the other part into the actual seal boot. Attach the outer boot seal's clamp to the interconnecting shaft so that the thinnest groove on the shaft shows. Attach the sealing boot to the interconnecting shaft using Crimper, Special Tool C-4975, to ensure the seal fits correctly and if it is off shape, recheck and rework it by hand. Slide the CV joint seal boot into the outer CV joint retaining area and safely attach the retaining clamp. Again, attach the Crimper, Special Tool C-4975, to hold the sealing boot onto the outer CV joint housing. At the end, install the driveshaft drive that requires a boot again on the automobile.
