Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake Shoe Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to install a Brake Shoe Set on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
To install the brake shoes, first apply Mopar(R) Brake Lubricant or equivalent to the shoe contact areas of the support plate and anchor. The bench shall have leading shoe and trailing shoe - with the latter featuring the parking brake lever. First, put the adjuster in place along with the upper return spring. Next, position the lever pawl under the adjuster and onto the pivot on the leading shoe. Finally, fit the adjuster spring between the leading shoe and the lever pawl. Subsequently, place the pre-assembled brake shoe assembly on top of the brake support plate over the wheel cylinder and the anchor. After this, insert both shoe hold-down pins from the rear through the support plate and shoes. Place the shoe hold down spring clips and install them on the pins, now install the lower return spring. After compressing the parking brake cable return spring, fit the cable on the parking brake lever. Ensure to release the spring underneath the lever retaining tab. Position the hub and bearing on the spindle in that order and install a NEW hub nut tightening it to a torque of 217 Nm (160 ft. lbs.). Install the hub and bearing dust cap, adjust the brake shoes to the drum diameter using a brake shoe gauge and install the brake drum. Position the tire and wheel assembly on the vehicle, then tighten the wheel mounting nuts to specifications. At a slow pace, turn both rear wheels to confirm that the brake drums lightly drag on the shoes. Then lower the vehicle and carry out a road test. As this is being done, the automatic-adjuster will continue to engage and adjust the brakes as necessary.
  • Q:
How to remove and replace the Brake Shoe Set on Chrysler PT Cruiser?
    A:
In the case of removing and replacing the brake shoes, the parking brake must be in the released position before raising and supporting the vehicle. Execute the removal process on both sides of the vehicle to complete the shoe set removal procedure. It may be beneficial to install new components on the first side before disassembling the opposite side for comparison. First, unscrew the nuts mounting wheel, and then take off the rear tire wheel assembly. After that, remove the brake drum retaining clips and then the drum. Take off the dust cover which is at the hub and bearing. Now, take off the hub nut and slide the hub and bearing off from the spindle. To detach the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever, compress the cable return spring and then take out the lower return spring. Compress and remove both the shoe hold-down spring clips. Then take out both shoes and other parts as an assembly from the anchor and the wheel cylinder. Take the adjuster spring from the leading shoe and the lever pawl off. Take the lever pawl off the pivot on the leading shoe and slide it out from under the adjuster. Remove the adjuster and the upper return spring from the shoes lastly.
