You have to take out the
Piston and connecting rod before you can service and repair the piston ring. Following that, open the rings with a ring expander, taking off both No. 1 and No. 2 piston rings from the piston, as well as both oil ring side rails and the oil ring expander. When installing the rings, make certain that their manufacturer's I.D. tag faces up on the top of the piston. The order for piston ring installation is oil ring expander, upper oil ring side rail, lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. Hold one end of the side rail between the piston ring groove and the expander, tighten it with your hands and press it down into place - without using the piston ring expander. First, install the upper side rail, then the lower side rail and finally put in No. 2 piston ring and No. 1 piston ring. Set the ring end gaps properly and keep the oil ring's expander gap at least 45° from the side rail gaps, away from the piston pin center and out of the thrust direction, as properly staggering the ring helps control oil.
