The Steering Knuckle of Dodge Avenger vehicles are unique components used in suspension and steering systems of these vehicles in establishing link between the front wheels and mechanical structure of the car. It holds control arm, tie rod ends, and wheel hub then allow for a vertical movement as a result of road surface and horizontal to facilitate steering. Dodge Avenger has its Steering Knuckles of different types depending on its drive arrangements, front wheel drive (FWD) and four wheel drive (4WD) or all wheel drive (AWD). In FWD/AWD models, the slide of the shaft extends its way through the Steering Knuckle that is intended to house the hub as well. The variations are mostly found at the Steering Knuckle area where there is a spindle or a hub that determines the method of wheel assembly and also the way that engages the drive system. In general, the Dodge Avenger Steering Knuckle plays a critical role of ensuring the stability and control of the wheels during the running of the car.

Dodge Avenger Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Steering Knuckle on Dodge Avenger?
    A:
The first step in servicing or repairing the spindle is to raise and support the vehicle. After that, unscrew the wheel mounting nuts and lift out both the tire and the wheel. Undo the bolt that helps route the brake tube and is fitted to the brake knuckle. Working on a rear disc brake, unscrew the assembly bolts from the caliper adapter to the brake support plate, pop off the disc Brake Caliper and adapter as a unit, hang it up with a wire or bungee cord out of the way and be cautious not to overstretch the brake hose. First, remove the brake rotor or Brake Drum and afterwards the hub and bearing. After that, take the blower and release the three bolts that hold the knuckle to the trailing link. After that, get rid of the three sets of bolts: one holding the toe link to the knuckle, one connecting the lower Control Arm and one connecting the upper control arm. When these steps are done, the knuckle can be pulled out.
  • Q: How is the Steering Knuckle Installed at the Front on Dodge Avenger?
    A:
If necessary, start by sliding the hub and bearing (1) into the front steering knuckle. Attach the hub and bearing (1) to the knuckle (3) with four bolts (2), tighten them to 82 Nm (60 ft. lbs.). If required, fasten the shield to the knuckle and tighten the three mounting screws (2) to 10 Nm (89 in. lbs.). Insert the little end of the hub and bearing into the big end of the half shaft outer C/V joint on the knuckle (2). Then, align the lower ball joint stud with its hole in the lower Control Arm, put it in and keep turning until the stud is secure. Insert and tighten a new ball joint stud nut (4) to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). The bolts connecting the strut clevis to the knuckle (5) have serrations: as you install the strut, hold the bolts still and tighten the nuts. Place the bottom of the strut assembly (3) over the top of the knuckle (6) and attach two mounting bolts (5). Twist both nuts (2) onto the bolts (5) and tighten them until they measure 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.). Attach the end of the outer tie rod (6) into the arm of the knuckle (2), put the nut (4) on the ball stud and hand tighten the nut. Then tighten it with a wrench to 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.). Attach wheel speed sensor 3 to knuckle 4 with the provided screw (2), limit the tightness to 12 Nm or 1 combined mesure (1.06 lbs) and fix routing clip 1 onto the sensor cable before tying the wheel speed sensor cables properly. Brush away any impurities you find on the half shaft outer C/V joint inner threads and keep in mind to use a new nut when fixing the hub back together. On the end of the half shaft (2), thread in and hand-tighten the hub nut (1). When a helper keeps the wheel from rotating, tighten the hub nut (3) to 132 Nm (97 ft. lbs.). Clamp the tire onto the wheel (1), insert the wheel onto the hub and tighten the nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Once you're done with everything, raise the vehicle and align the wheels as needed.
