  How to remove the Backing Plate from the brake on Dodge Caliber?

  To remove the brake backing plate, first, use a brake pedal holding tool to depress the brake pedal past its first inch of travel and hold it to isolate the master cylinder from the brake hydraulic system, preventing brake fluid from draining out of the master cylinder reservoir. Next, raise and support the vehicle, then remove the three wheel mounting nuts and the tire and wheel assembly. Access and remove the six drum brake shoes from the support plate. Position a 10 mm box wrench over the retainer fingers on the end of the parking brake cable housing, compress the retaining fingers with the wrench, and pull the cable housing out of the support plate. Disconnect the brake tube at the wheel cylinder and remove the wheel cylinder attaching screws. Take out the wheel cylinder from the support plate. If a wheel speed sensor is present, remove the screw fastening the sensor head in the rear of the hub and bearing and take the sensor head out. Finally, remove the four bolts securing the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer to the trailing link, then take the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer out as an assembly from the trailing link, separating the spacer and hub and bearing from the support plate once removed.

  How to install the Backing Plate and ensure proper brake operation on Dodge Caliber?

  The backing plate can be installed by assembling the hub and bearing through the support plate and installing the spacer at the rear of the assembly. You will then install the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer as an assembly onto the trailing link. Use new mounting bolts or clean and apply Mopar(R) Stud & Bearing Mount Adhesive or equivalent onto the threads of the original mounting bolts prior to reuse. Then, install the four bolts securing the hub and bearing, support plate, and spacer to the trailing link, tightening to 105 Nm (77 ft. lbs.). Fit the parking brake cable to the brake support plate in its mounting hole and push the cable housing in until the fingers of the retainer lock. If the wheel speed sensor is fitted, the wheel speed sensor head is installed from rear of hub and bearing with the wheel speed sensor head mounting screw and the screw is tightened to torque of 10 Nm (89 in. lbs). To install the wheel cylinder, mount it to the brake support plate and tighten mounting screws to 13 Nm (115 in. lbs.). Join the brake tube to the cylinder wheel and tighten the tube nut to 17 Nm (150 in. lbs.) Lubricate the shoe contact areas on the support plate and anchor using Mopar(R) Brake Lubricant or equivalent, after inspecting the brake shoes before install. Install the drum brake shoes and drum and adjust the shoes. Tighten the wheel mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) while installing the tire and wheel assembly. Carefully rotate the rear wheel to ensure it drags lightly on the shoes of the brake drum, lower the car and remove the brake pedal holding tool. The affected wheel cylinder should be bled as necessary and road tested to check brake operation.
