Dodge Caravan Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Ball Joint on Dodge Caravan?
    A:
Prior to working on the lower ball joint, take off the lower Control Arm from your vehicle. Use a screwdriver to pop the seal boot off the ball joint assembly. Supports Special Tool 6758 under the lower control arm and uses Remover, Special Tool 6919, on top of the ball joint as you take it out. Leaving the axis in place, take out the ball joint assembly with an arbor press attached to the lower control arm. Set the ball joint into the lower control arm and be certain that it is straight in the ball joint bore so it does not bind when you apply pressure. With the ball joint already in the arm, center the Installer, Special Tool 6908-4, on the bottom part of the ball joint and place the arm in the arbor press with Receiving Cup, Special Tool 6758, below, ready to secure it. Guide all the elements together and insert the ball joint into the control arm all the way down until there is no space between them. Fit the shield of the ball joint seal into the dismiss boot where it is meant to go. Manually fasten the seal boot until it is as far into the crankshaft as you can reach, but don't push it in using an arbor press since it might damage the seal. Press the seal boot toward the top of the lower control arm using Installer, Special Tool 6758. After fitting the seal boot, use Mopar Multi-Mile grease or a similar substitute to lubricate the new joint and ensure air can vent at the notch as you pump in the grease. Following greasing, fit the clip onto the grease fitting so that it is below the hex, as extra grease can ruin the non-purgeable seal on the ball joint. After that, reattach the lower control arm to the car.
