Dodge Charger Intermediate Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install an Intermediate Shaft on Dodge Charger?
    A:
Bring the gear end end through the hole in the dash panel from the passenger compartment and then push the seal onto the studs. Use the upper coupling on the intermediate shaft to line up with the plastic alignment fin on the steering column shaft. After that, gently fit, move and push the intermediate shaft onto the column shaft. Replace the steering intermediate shaft pinch bolt with a NEW one and keep it tightened to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Set the two dash seal mounting nuts on the intermediate shaft and tighten them to 7 Nm (62 in. lbs.). Lift the vehicle and arrange the pin from the intermediate shaft with the nut held on the lower coupling shaft. Now, press the intermediate shaft into the lower coupling. Replace the original steering coupling pinch bolt with a NEW one at the intermediate shaft and set it to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Set the car as low as it will go, add the parking brake lever, release the steering wheel holder and check for binding or odd noises in the steering column.
  • Q: How to remove the Intermediate Shaft on Dodge Charger?
    A:
Before removing the intermediate shaft on RHD vehicles, first pull or extend the Steering Wheel all the way out if possible, make sure the wheels are facing forward, center the wheel and hold it in place using a steering wheel holder. Raise up the vehicle and take out the bolt that holds the intermediate shaft to the steering coupling shaft. Take off the spring on the steering coupling, bring the vehicle down and remove the two bolts holding the intermediate shaft to the dash panel. Loose the shaft seal near the dash panel, then come out the intermediate shaft pinch bolt from the steering shaft. To finish, take the intervening shaft off the steering column and get rid of it.
