The Dodge Charger Spark Plug is the ignition part that initiates and supports combustion within the engine cylinder. The Spark Plug is housed in a metal threaded shell that seats in the cylinder head. A Spark Plug has a central electrode which is surrounded by a ceramic insulator. This Spark Plug is placed next to a side electrode so that a calibrated gap is created. Within the cylinder of a Charger, the high voltage from the ignition coil flows through the central electrode, jumps the gap, causes a timed spark, ignites the compressed air and fuel mixture, and pushes the piston down in the power stroke. At idle, it can fire about 3 to 400 times per minute, increasing to well over 1000 at cruising speed and doing this for many thousand miles before its electrodes wear out. With proper gap setting, correct heat range, and clean electrodes, every Spark Plug delivers efficient combustion and prevents damage. All Dodge versions of the Charger make use this identical Spark Plug function; thus ensuring reliable starting and steady powering of the Dodge lineup of engines, which also matches the combustion necessities of the Dodge Charger engine.

Dodge Charger Spark Plug Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How should the Spark Plug be installed in a 2.7L engine to avoid damage and ensure proper performance on Dodge Charger?
    A:
While installing the spark plug of the 2.7L engine, do not drop or force it into the wells in any manner since the electrodes or porcelain body can be damaged. In order to prevent cross-threading in the cylinder head, hand start the spark plug and tighten to 17.5 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). Cross threading the spark plug or over torquing the spark plug will damage the cylinder head or spark plug causing engine problems. The coil should be aligned with the top of the spark plug. The coil assembly is then twisted down on to the spark plug. Install the mounting bolt and tighten it to 7.5 Nm (65 in. lbs.). Attach the electrical connector to the ignition coil and install the upper intake manifold. Finally, attach the negative battery cable and tighten the nut to 5 Nm (45 in. lbs.).
  • Q:
How to service the Spark Plug(s) on a 2.7L engine on Dodge Charger?
    A:
To service the spark plugs on the 2.7L engine, first disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. After that, detach the upper intake manifold. To disconnect the ignition coils, you will first need to unplug the electrical connector. After that, you will need to remove the fastener from each assembly of ignition coil. Twist, elevate and lift the ignition coil away from the engine. Before removing the spark plugs, use compressed air to clean dirt at the spark plug openings to prevent engine damage. Make use of a quality socket fitted with a foam or rubber insert for removing the spark plug.
