How to Service and Repair a Torque Converter on Dodge Charger?

Before servicing or repairing, first remove the transmission and torque converter, placing a drain pan under the end where the converter is. The lifting device or work surface must be securely verified before removing the torque converter, since the entire unit will become unstable as its center of gravity changes due to its weight. Keep pulling the torque converter forward until the center hub passes the oil pump seal and only then separate it from the transmission. Inspect and polish the converter hub and drive with 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth, as sharp or damaged edges may damage the pump seal, before you start installation. Moisturize the edge of the oil pump seal with transmission fluid and then gently lower the torque converter onto the transmission. Lines up the locations of the torque converter and the opening on the oil pump seal, insert the hub inside the oil pump, then, while pushing the converter inward, rotate it until seated in the oil pump gears. Set a scale on the converter lugs and place a straightedge in front of them. The lugs should be 1/2 in. behind the straightedge when seated. Wrap a C-clamp around the converter and secure it to the housing if necessary and then place the transmission back in the car. Fill it up with the full amount of recommended fluid.
