Before servicing the water pump, first release all coolant, take off the fan, as well as the
Drive Belt, observing that it is operated by the primary
Timing Chain. After that, remove the timing chain and all its guides, then detach the two bolts side by side attaching the first water pump to the block and remove water pump 1 together with its gasket. Examine the pump, especially for cracks, damage, coolant leaking from the shaft area, a blockage in one weep hole, infrequent rubbing of the impeller inside the block or concern about one or more loose and rough bearings. Even though a small amount of coolant may seep from the primary weep hole, a heavy deposit indicates the shaft seal has failed and requires the pump to be replaced. If leakage is spotted from the secondary weep, take out any debris from the primary weep passage. When installing, make sure the areas between parts are clean, place water pump 1 and put in the gasket and tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Following this, replace the timing chain guides and timing chain, add in the drive belts and fit the radiator fan assembly before filling the cooling system.
