How to Service the Axle Shaft in a C205F Front Axle Assembly on Dodge Dakota?

Prior to working on the C205F Front Axle Assembly, lift and support your vehicle, then take off the skid plate and the skid plate support crossmember if they get in your way. After that, unfasten both shafts between the shift assembly and C/V gears and put marks on the propeller shaft, transfer case and pinion companion flange for when you reinstall them. Support the differential by means of an adjustable jack, then unbolt the axle from the engine mounts and pinion nose bracket. With the support of the jack, pull down the housing and take out the axle from the vehicle. First, move the axle into the proper position and try to secure it with loose bolts and nuts. Screw all bolts just enough so they don't fall out, then tighten them to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Reattach the axle vent tube, place the propeller shaft, transfer case and pinion companion flange so the marks line up, set the propeller shaft in next and add the C/V driveshafts. When needed, put the skid plate support crossmember and skid plate back on, top up the differential fluid if needed and take out the supports afterwards before lowering the vehicle.

How to Install Axle Shaft and Differential Components on Dodge Dakota?

Gear lubricant should be applied to both the inside of the bearing bore and around the seal lip before you install the axle shaft. After that, slide the shaft through the seal and bearing, fitting it into the side gear splines (3) and ensuring you do not hurt the axle shaft seal as you do this. Once you've installed the key C-lock (1) on the axle shaft (2), squeeze the shaft to get it to fit into the side gear. Afterwards, set the pinion shaft into the differential case so that it goes through both the thrust washers and differential pinions. Position the hole in the shaft and the hole in the differential case together and use Loctite(R) to thread in and tighten the lock screw (4) to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.). After that, fit the differential cover and apply gear oil before putting back the rear braking components.
