The CV Boot located in Dodge Dakota vehicle plays an important role of shielding the nested Constant Velocity (CV) joints necessary for transmitting power from the transaxle to the wheels. This stretchable rubber or plastic cover provides adequate housing for the required lubricant for the CV joints while on the same note it locks any grime from penetrating in the process with the result being excellently performed CV joints. Specifically, the outer ends of the drive shafts of Dodge Dakota models employ Rzeppa joint while the inner ends employ either tripod or double offset joint. The outer ones are made to endure large angles while the inboard ones are designed for accepting changes in the length of shaft during suspension motion. Thus, constant examination of the CV Boot is advised because any damage including crack or tear on the Boot affects functionality of the CV joint.

Dodge Dakota CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a CV Boot on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
The first step to fixing or repairing the boot of the constant velocity joint is taking out the driveshaft from the vehicle and then the outer C/V joint. Loosen the outer C/V joint clamp, take off the boot and next remove the inner C/V joint clamps and dispose of the boot. Remember to use the correct amount of lubricant for each type of boot, whether it's an inner or outer C/V joint. Clear out any old grease and dirt from the C/V joints and shaft, slip the boot for the inner C/V joint up the shaft and ensure the lip at the small end of the boot is into the shaft groove. Secure the small end of the boot boot in a ladder-type clamp into the groove, ensuring the lip and boot are in line with the shaft and then tighten by fitting the locating tabs into the slots. Use Remover/Installer C-4124 to squeeze the clamp bridge together, making sure you do not harm the boot. Make sure the large-diameter part of the boot is against the C/V joint housing, then install the inner joint boot small clamp and compress the inner hub using the connector shaft and a small drift to make sure it's 181mm (7.13 inches) from the edge of the flange to the edge of the lip. Make sure the boot is not twisted and in its correct place and then install the large ladder clamp onto the boot. Slip a small clamp over the shaft between the outer C/V joint boot and the wheel, place the boot over the shaft and lock it with the clamp as before. Apply the large boot clamp over the outer C/V joint, link the outer C/V joint to the shaft and attach the boot and C/V joint to the large boot clamp, before putting the C/V driveshaft back in place.
  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a CV Boot and CV Joint on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
Grab the shaft in a vise with soft jaws and place the joint on the opposite side for best results. First, use a cut-off wheel or grinder to take the clamps off, remembering not to harm the ON housing or half shaft. After that, separate the housing from the half shaft and lower the boot along the shaft. After removing the housing bushing, remove the tripod snap ring from the housing and take out the tripod and boot from the half shaft. Look for signs of too much wear or any damage on the tripod's C/V parts and replace the tripod as a whole if that's what the problem requires. First, fit a new boot down the half shaft, then insert the tripod onto the half shaft and snap the tripod snap ring on. Rub the grease from the kit inside the joint/boot and slaush the boot and housing with the grease. Put the new bushing onto the housing, set your tripod and shaft into the housing and with the boot back in its original place, confirm it is not twisted and let out any extra air. After that, use the Clamp Installer C-4975A to install both boot clamps firmly on their bridge by hand tightening until the jaws come together.
