The Starter Relay of the Dodge Dakota directs battery voltage to the starter solenoid so that the engine can crank when you turn the ignition key. The Starter Relay is part of the starter control circuit and is supplied with a low current signal by either the ignition switch or the PCM. This internal switch closes, and full power from the battery flows through to the solenoid which connects the starter motor to the flywheel. With a non-functional Starter Relay, the solenoid cannot receive voltage. As long as the key is in the start position, the relay is in on condition and removing the key breaks the circuit and stops the current flow. If the Starter Relay sticks in the closed position, the starter stays meshed with the flywheel causing stress on the transmission and starting components. A relay stuck in the open position blocks the current causing a no start condition. An appropriately functioning Starter Relay protects the electrical unit and mechanical part of the Dodge Dakota starting system and also ensures that engine engagement occurs every time a Dodge Dakota driver initiates a start on a well maintained Dodge Dakota.

Dodge Dakota Starter Relay Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How should the Starter Relay be serviced on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
The first step in servicing the starter relay is to disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. Take off the cover of the Power Distribution Center (PDC) and locate the starter relay using the fuse and relay layout label on the underside of the PDC cover. Withdraw the starter relay from the PDC. For installation, use the same label to find the starter relay correct location; place the starter relay in the appropriate receptacle, and align the relay terminals with the terminal cavities in the PDC receptacle. Place the operator relay firmly until the terminals are completely seated. Reconnect the negative battery cable and put the cover back on the PDC.
  • Q:
Where is the Starter Relay located, and How to inspect and install it on Dodge Dakota?
    A:
The Power Distribution Center (PDC) contains the starter relay; the label on the cover of the PDC indicates its location. You need to disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable when you remove the PDC cover to locate the relay. Remove the starter relay from PDC and check the relay terminals and PDC connector terminals for damages or corrosion and repair them before fitting the relay. Ensure pin height uniformity for all terminals in the PDC connector and repair them if not so. For installation, push down firmly on the starter relay to ensure the terminals are fully seated in the PDC receptacle. Reinstall PDC cover and reconnect battery cable.
