Remove the wheel and tire assembly after raising and supporting the vehicle to remove the rear brake shoes. Remove the nut which is securing the brake drum to the wheel studs. Remove the drum. If the drum is difficult to remove, the rear plug in the support plate can be accessed and the self-adjusting mechanism can be backed off with a screwdriver inserted into the access hole to push the lever away from the adjuster screw star wheel. The adjuster tool can be used to rotate the star wheel and retract the brake shoes. In order to eliminate brake lining dust, vacuum the brake parts and then remove the shoe return springs with a brake spring plier tool. Remove the adjuster cable by sliding the cable eye off the anchor pin and unhooking it from the adjuster lever. Strip down the secondary shoe by taking off the cable guide and, from the anchor pin, the anchor plate; slide the adjuster lever forward to remove it from the spring. Detach the adjuster lever spring from its pivot, followed by disconnecting and removing the shoe spring from the brake shoes and the adjuster screw assembly. Remove the brake shoe retainers and springs, and then remove the secondary brake shoe from the support plate, the strut, and spring. Remove the clip holding the parking brake lever to the secondary shoe and then remove the lever. Next, remove the primary shoe from the support plate and detach the parking brake lever from the parking brake cable. For installation, the individual brake components should be cleaned and inspected. Lubricate the anchor pin and brake shoe contact pads on the support plate with a high-temperature grease, or Lubriplate. Lubricate the adjuster screw socket, nut, button, and screw thread surfaces. Begin by installing the parking brake cable on the parking brake lever. Afterward, secure the parking brake lever to the secondary shoe using a retaining clip. Mount the primary shoe onto the support plate with new spring retainers and pin fitted. Place the spring onto the parking brake strut and engage the spring in the primary shoe. Firstly, affix the secondary shoe to the support plate. Secondly, insert the strut in the shoe and guide it over the anchor pin. Finally, fit it temporarily with the retaining pin. Affix the anchor plate and adjuster cable eyelet to the support plate anchor pin, place the cable guide in the secondary shoe and arrange the cable in the guide. Assemble the adjuster screw and fit it between the brake shoes. Ensure that the adjuster screws are correctly labelled L (left) and R (right). The adjuster lever and spring work will be fixed; also connect the adjuster cable to the lever; finally, install the secondary shoe retainers; and spring. In connecting the shoe spring, first attach to secondary shoe and then to the primary shoe. To check that the adjuster cable, when pulled upward, lifts the lever and rotates the star wheel the right way. Lifting the lever also checks that the adjuster lever engages the star wheel teeth. Last but not least, brake shoes should be gauged to the drum with a brake gauge and the wheel and tire should be reinstalled.
