Before servicing or repairing the front seat belt and retractor unit, disconnect the negative battery cable, then wait two minutes to allow the system capacitor to discharge. Look at each seat belt, buckle, part that holds them on, retractors, tether straps and anchors for any signs of improper installation or tears and fix or replace any areas of damage. For a non-deployed seat belt tensioner, refer to the appendix for guidance on dealing with non-deployed supplementary restraints. If deployed, refer to the sections on servicing after deployment. Place the front seat back against the dashboard so that reaching the lower anchor and trim will be easier. Simply use a trim stick to carefully lift the seat belt cover off the outboard rear side of the seat shield. Get rid of the screw that holds the lower anchor to the bracket at the outboard side of the front seat frame. Open the trim cover by unsnapping the part above the front seat belt turn loop and releasing the tab beneath it to get to the turning loop screw. Because the turning loop attaches to the B-pillar's upper part, unscrew the screw and remove the loop as well. The upper and lower trim inside the B-pillar should be removed. Unscrew the belt web guide from the B-pillar. Unplug the body wire harness connector from the seat belt tensioner initiator on the retractor and remove the second connector from the seat belt switch receptacle on the retractor too. Loose the screws that join the upper and lower retractor brackets to the B-pillar, disconnect the pin from the top of the retractor bracket and bring out the seatbelt and retractor together.
