How to Remove and Replace an A/C Clutch on Dodge Grand Caravan?

Before taking out and installing the compressor clutch, disconnect and remove the negative battery cable from the battery. After that, detach the hose leading from the air filter housing and the resonator. Drain the coolant from the engine a bit, detach the upper radiator hose from the radiator and position it out of your way. Remove the fan from the radiator, as well as the cover, then remove the accessory drive belt. Remove the engine wire harness from the connector on top of the compressor clutch field coil. Lift out the compressor clutch field coil connector and wire lead from the underside of the connector bracket. Get rid of the shaft bolt from the compressor using a strap wrench or band-type oil filter wrench to secure the clutch plate from turning. Don't insert tools close to the clutch plate and pulley and bearing assembly and stay careful not to lose the shim(s) during removal. Lightly strike the clutch plate with a plastic mallet to free it from the splines on the compressor shaft and then remove both the clutch plate and any shim(s). Use Snap Ring Pliers 9764 or similar to remove the snap ring holding the pulley and bearing to the compressor and then remove the unit. Once the other screws are removed, put your Snap Ring Pliers 9764 in place and use them to remove the snap ring holding the clutch field coil to the front of the A/C compressor.

How to Install the A/C Clutch on Dodge Grand Caravan?

First, push the back dowel pin of the compressor clutch field coil into the front hole on the A/C compressor sleeve. Make sure the compressor clutch field coil is aligned so the wire lead doesn't get pinched. The clutch field coil should be kept in place by a fresh snap ring, with the bevel on the outside and the eyelets either to the right or left of the dowel pin. Take the Snap Ring Pliers 9764 or similar and connect the field coil using the snap ring so it fits all the way into the groove. Take care not to damage the friction surfaces while installing the pulley and bearing assembly and always put the snap ring on with the bevel pointing to the outside when securing it. If you use the original parts, put the shim(s) back on the compressor shaft; if you replace them, add a stack of trial 2.54 mm shims. Set the clutch plate at the front of the A/C compressor and make sure to tighten the compressor shaft bolt to 19 Nm. After tightening, measure the gap between the piston ring and the engine cylinder in various places; if it's not 0.35 - 0.60 mm, adjust the shims to compensate. Push the compressor clutch field coil wire lead up through the hole in the connector bracket, attach the connector to the bracket and plug in the engine wire harness. Secure the accessory drive belt in place, add back the radiator fan and shroud, attach the upper radiator hose with a secure clamp and connect the air intake hose. Complete the cooling system with fresher fluid and attach the negative battery cable again.
