- Q:How can a Backing Plate be serviced and repaired on Dodge Grand Caravan?A:To service and repair the backing plate, first use a brake pedal depressor to secure the brake pedal past its first 1 inch of travel to prevent brake fluid from draining out of the master cylinder when the brake tube is removed from the wheel cylinder. Next, raise the vehicle and remove the wheel and tire assembly. Disconnect the brake tube from the rear of the wheel cylinder and cap the open ends. Remove the brake drum and then take off the brake shoes from the brake support plate. Remove the 2 bolts that attach the wheel cylinder to the brake support plate and take the wheel cylinder out. Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake actuation lever, and using a suitable tool such as a 14 mm box wrench or an aircraft type hose clamp, compress the flared legs on the park brake cable retainer before pulling the park brake cable out of the brake support plate. Finally, remove the rear hub and bearing, followed by the rear brake support plate from the rear axle.
- Q:How to remove and install the Backing Plate on Dodge Grand Caravan?A:To remove the backing plate, first, lift the vehicle using the required lifting procedure. Then remove the wheel and tire assembly. Last, remove the brake drum from the hub/bearing. After that, disengage the brake shoes from the brake support plate and remove the park brake cable. Further, disengage the park brake actuation lever. Be sure to first remove the rear wheel speed sensor prior to removing the hub or bearing. This sensor is bolted to the hub or bearing and close by and thus could be damaged if not first removed. Take care not to damage the teeth on the tone wheel while working in the area of the rear hub/bearing. Detach the 4 bolts securing the hub/bearing to the rear axle flange. Corrosion may make removal difficult. If the hub/bearing cannot be removed by hand, remove it using Remover Special Tool 8214, which is mentioned under Service Tools. Position the special tool, 8214-1, over the tone wheel and while in contact with the cast flange of the hub/ bearing, grease bolt pilot hole. Insert special tool 8214-2 at the hole in the end casting of the axle. Let it rest on the axle plate. If this does not fit, file or grind the flashing until it does. Insert the bolt in special tools 8214-2 into the pilot hole on 8214-1, then tighten the bolt to press the hub/bearing out of the axle. Once they are taken away, remove the hub/bearing from the rear axle and brake support plate, and compress the flared legs on the park brake cable retainer using a suitable tool, then pull the park brake cable from the brake support plate. To prevent brake f luid from leaking when disconnecting the brake tube from the wheel cylinder, lower the vehicle, access the brake pedal and use a brake pedal depressor to move the brake pedal past the first inch of travel. Once more elevating the vehicle, disconnect the brake tube from the wheel cylinder, while also unfastening the two bolts that secure the wheel cylinder to the brake support plate, and remove the wheel cylinder. Initially, the rear brake support plate must be removed from the rear axle. For installation, first, install the four hub/bearing to axle mounting bolts into the rear axle flange, and place the rear brake support plate on these bolts. Make sure that the thick bearing mounting flange of the hub/bearing points down, aline with the mounting bolts, before tightly securing on each bolt in a crisscross pattern until fully seated. Apply sealant around the wheel cylinder opening in the brake support plate and install the wheel cylinder. Tighten the cylinder's bolts to 8 Nm (75 inch lbs.). Tighten the hub/bearing mounting bolts to a torque of 129 Nm (95 ft. lbs.). Attach the brake tube to the rear wheel cylinder, tightening the tube nut to 16 Nm (142 inch lbs.), then install the rear wheel speed sensor and tighten its attaching bolt to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Fit the rear park brake cable into the mounting hole before connecting it to the park brake actuation lever and installing the rear brake shoes on the brake support plate. Now fit the brake drum onto the hub/bearing, install the wheel and tire, then tighten the wheel stud nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Once the brake drums are adjusted, bleed the entire braking system and lower the vehicle.
