To remove the rear drum brake shoes and replace them, lift the vehicle and remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies. Next, if equipped, remove the rear brake drum to hub retaining clips and then remove the rear brake drum. While ensuring that the park brake pedal is in the released position, create slack in the park brake cables by pulling down and rearward on the exposed section of the front park brake cable and lock the slack with locking pliers just rearward of the rear body outrigger bracket. Detach the adjustment lever spring from both the adjustment lever and front brake shoe and then detach the adjustment lever from the leading brake shoe. Separate the lower return springs from the brake shoe before removing the tension clip which connects the upper return spring to the auto adjuster assembly. Next, detach the return spring from the upper end of the brake shoe, and remove the trailing brake shoe assembly from the holding down spring and pin. Next, remove brake support plate, park brake actuating lever and park brake actuating strut from the trailing brake shoe assembly, and remove automatic adjuster assembly from the leading brake shoe. Remove the leading brake shoe assembly to the brake support plate hold down spring and pin, and remove the leading brake shoe from the brake support plate, transferring the park brake actuator from the leading brake shoe to the replacement brake shoe.
