Before handling the valve body, disconnect the battery negative cable and take the battery and the tray out. Mount the overhead powertrain support fixture using Tool 8534B and adapter kit 8534-12, remove the dipstick tube fastener and mount, but do not tighten, lift/support bracket 8534-8 on the cylinder end with the dipstick tube bolt. Take out the
Coolant Temperature Sensor around the thermostat housing, unscrew the engine harness-to-cylinder head bolt and keep the harness out of the way. Put in and fasten the support bracket with bolt 8534-7. Fit cross-bar 8534-3, clamp 8534-5 and support leg 8534-4 to the support tube so the support leg is on the radiator upper support and tighten both the cross-bar-to-support tube clamp 8534-5 and the mounting bracket/sleeve 8534-2 thumb screw together with the hex nut. Install the lift bracket/hook assemblies and turn the t-handles to tighten the hold between the fixture and drivetrain. Remove the gear
Shift Cable from the manual valve lever and take out the manual valve lever from the manual shaft. Lift the vehicle on a hoist and take out the nuts that hold the engine mounts in both the front and rear of the engine crossmember. Put scribe lines at the engine cradle crossmember and the body where they will be aligned during putting the car back together. Support the cradle at its back using a screw jack (or similar) and partially loosen the engine cradle mounting crossmember-to-body bolts. Lowering the cradle at the rear allows it to pivot more easily. Heave the cradle at the front using a screw jack or similar, take out all the remaining bolts attaching the cradle crossmember to the body and slowly lower the cradle 10 inches for easy valve body removal. After the bolts under it are removed, lift off the
Oil Pan and take out the
Oil Filter. After removing the valve body-to-transaxle case bolts, turn the manual valve clockwise all the way to low or first gear to facilitate getting it out. After that, take off the park rod rollers from the guide bracket and strip the valve body out of the transaxle, ensuring the accumulator and springs are not misplaced and the manual valve is handled carefully.
