    Take the transmission and the torque converter from the vehicle first to remove the torque converter. Place a drain pan under the converter housing end of the transmission before starting the install process. Keep the transmission secured in case the weight of the making falls to one side while the torque converter is removed. Because the torque converter is heavy, be careful when separating it from the transmission. Pull the converter far enough so the center hub clears the oil pump seal, then separate it from the transmission.

    You should polish the converter hub and drive notches using 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth if they have sharp edges, burrs, scratches or nicks to keep them smooth and prevent hurting the pump seal when installing the converter. Pour transmission fluid on the converter hub and seal of the oil pump, then mount the torque converter. When you're installing the torque converter up front, watch that you don't break the oil pump seal or bushing. Place the torque converter on top of the oil pump seal and then slide the converter hub inside. Turn the torque converter until it is all the way seated on the oil pump gears as you push it inward. Use a ruler and scale to make sure that the converter lugs your seater is on are half an inch behind the straightedge when securely seated. When the converter could move, secure it for now by placing a C-clamp on the housing around the converter. Install the transmission in the car and pour in the fluid advised for that type.
