Dodge Ram 1500 Van Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a radiator on Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
    A:
The first step is to disconnect the battery negative cable, check the radiator is not under pressure and make sure it's not hot. Raise the car using a hoist, empty the cooling system and use comfortable tools such as special clamp tool (Number 6094) or Snap-On Clamp Tool (Number Hpc-20) for big constant tension hose clamps while still wearing safety glasses. Unattach the plastic radiator lower hose from the outlet on the radiator, remove the lines from the cooler fittings on the transmission, screw on cap plugs to the lines and place them so they are out of the way. Raise the vehicle, then take off the engine oil filler tube, all supports that connect the radiator to the cowl, the fitting on the radiator for the coolant hose, the washer bottle and the bottle used to collect extra coolant. Detach the radiator upper hose opposite of the radiator, slide the fan shroud from its liners and place the shroud toward the back of the engine. Carefully lift the radiator from the engine area after removing the bolts that connect it to its mounting spots. Carefully spray cold water onto each fin to remove the dirt and ensure air conditioning and radiator heat transfer is good. Search the side tanks of the radiator for any cracks or loose or broken ends and make sure the seam between the tanks and the core is secure and not leaking. Look carefully at the radiator to find any corroded, bent or missing cooling fins or damage to the cooling tubes. For installation, snap the fan shroud to the back of the engine, keep the radiator on top with lower mounting bolts, lower the radiator into its position so the lower slots sit on the installed bolts and tighten all upper mounting bolts to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.). Put the fan shroud on the radiator flange, then screw and tighten the fan clamps to 6 Nm (50 inch lbs.). Lift up the vehicle, connect the radiator lower hose to the radiator outlet and clamp it, take off the covers from the cooler lines, check for problems and attach them to the cooler fittings. Have the vehicle lowered, attach the radiator upper hose and clip to the radiator inlet, put the coolant recovery bottle into place by inserting the bottom tab into its slot in the radiator mounting panel and fasten it with two bolts bolted to 6 Nm (50 inch lbs.). Bind the coolant hose to the radiator's filler neck, set the windshield washer reservoir in place, install the upper supports between the radiator and cowl and put in the engine oil filler tube. Refill the coolant, use the engine until it temperatures down, drain any air in the heater hose if needed and check the fluids in the engine and the transmission.
