Dodge Ram 2500 Van Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and replace the front parking brake cable on Dodge Ram 2500 Van?
    A:
Raise and support your vehicle before servicing or changing the front parking brake cable. Turn the adjusting nut clockwise to loosen the cable and then take out the front cable from the connector. With a 1/2 inch boxed end wrench, squeeze the cable housing retainer tabs beneath the underbody bracket and remove the cable. Drop the vehicle and push the ball part of the cable out of the pedal clevis using a small screwdriver. Press the two tabs on the cable housing retainer at the pedal bracket, then take out the cable. After that, take out the left cowl trim and sill plate, lift the carpet and remove the cable from the body clip. Lift on the cable to take it and the body grommet out. When you install, put the cable housing retainer into the hole in the pedal assembly and see it is seated correctly from inside the vehicle and on the seat. Place the cable ball end into the clevis on the pedal assembly and guide the cable over the wheel well's top section and clip it. First, feed the cable under the floorpan and place the body grommet; after that, lay the carpet and set the left cowl trim and sill plate back in place. Raise and lay down the car again, slide the cable through the underbody bracket and snap the cable housing retainer into the bracket. Connect the cable to the cable connector, do the park brake adjustment and then bring down the vehicle.
  • Q: How to service and repair the rear parking brake cables on Dodge Ram 2500 Van?
    A:
When working on the rear parking brake cables for 2500/3500 series vehicles, pull the parking brake lever, make sure the vehicle is in neutral and raise it. Loose the cable adjuster nut and remove the cables from the bracket in the back of the frame. Take off the clip fastened to the right rear bracket and pull the cable out from the frame. Squeeze the left retainer to get the cable through the frame bracket. Take out the right rear cable from its holder on the brake hose and remove the cable retainers from the axle. After that, remove the wheels from the rear and the brake drums as well, disconnect each cable from the park brake lever and free the cable guide spring. Pull the cable tab compressor on each retainer at the brake support plate and remove the cables. The steps should start with mounting the cable guide spring and the brake drums. First, pull the cable just a bit, then push it through the brake support plate hole where it can be attached to the park brake lever. Insert all the brake cable housings into the brake support plate's holes, making sure the tabs click in and then pull the housings to confirm they are held in place. Secure the correct cable retainers to the axle and latch the opposite brake cable into the hole in the bracket. Put both cables through the frame bracket, making sure the left cable reaches the end needed for the retainer tabs and then place and fix the retainer clip to the right cable, noting where they go as the right cable has the top hole and the left, the bottom hole. Connect the cables on one end to the cable tensioner bracket and then join them to the cable connectors. Replacing the wheel and tire assembly, doing a park brake adjustment, removing the supports and bringing down the vehicle should be the last steps.
