Before you can service or repair a single cardan universal joint, you have to remove the propeller shaft. Drift softly near the bearing cap assembly to break the seal of the snap ring and remove every snap ring on the side of the yoke. Hold the yoke with a vise or arbor press, checking that a socket of appropriate size is under the yoke to receive the bearing cap. Press a socket that matches the size of the outer diameter onto the top bearing cap and use it to push the bearing cap through the yoke and release the one below it. If removing the bearing cap by hand doesn't work after pressing, try tapping the yoke ear on the side of the bearing cap to loosen it. To take off the opposite bearing cap, turn the yoke upside down, pull the cross straight and press on the end of the straightened cross lightly to stir it out. Keep the positions of the cross or bearing cap straight during installation to prevent marks on the walls of the yoke bore. During assembly, you should put in the entire EP N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease into the bore of the yoke. Ensure the cross's lube fitting is up when placed into the yoke, then cover the trunnion with a bearing cap and correctly position it in the yoke bore so the needle bearings are correctly angled. Press down on the cap of the bearing into the yoke bore so that the snap ring can be placed. Do the process again for the other bearing cap and if there is lag or resistance, tap the yoke with a soft hammer to settle the needle bearings. Next, lubricate the fitting with grease if your engine has one and install the propeller shaft.
