  Raise the vehicle, take off the tire and wheel and then remove the Brake Drum before service or repair. Move the adjuster lever in the direction away from the screw and turn the screw star wheel until it disappears. Together, remove the brake shoe return springs, adjuster spring and adjuster screw, next slide the top of each brake shoe apart to provide space for the wheel cylinder links. First, loosen and remove the Brake Line from the wheel cylinder and then remove the attaching screws on the support plate to complete the removal. To keep road splash out of the brake drum, use a little silicone sealer on the wheel cylinder mounting side of the support plate after installation. Press the end of the brake line into the cylinder inlet and leave it loose until you proceed to checking the line for any problems. Place the wheel cylinder onto the support plate and then use gravity to fit the attaching screws, tightening them to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). After that, bolt the brake line fitting to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.), insert all brake shoe components and align the brake shoes with the drum using a brake gauge. At this point, set the brake drum, empty the braking system and attach the wheel and tire again before lowering the vehicle.

  For service and repairs, clean the wheel cylinder and Pistons with brake fluid or brake cleaner only. Keep the cylinder and pistons clean by blowing compressed air on them, since using cloths can let lint stick to their bores. Normally, the bore may appear slightly discolored or stained which won't affect operation; if it's pitted, scored or severely corroded, you should replace the cylinder, since honing is not advisable. Review the pistons in the cylinders for any visible scratching, scoring or rust. If the pistons are worn or damaged, replace them and never polish or sand them because you could ruin them. Throw away the old piston cups, spring and expander, because they cannot be reused, yet the original wheel boots may still be usable if you find them in working order.
