Lower the vehicle to Neutral and raise it a bit for support to start servicing or repairing your rear axle 8 1/4. Take out the wheel and tire and next remove the brake drum. Clean the outside of the housing cover, then take it off and empty the lubricant from the audio player. Raise the differential case from the pinion shaft so you can find the lock screw on the pinion shaft and use a wrench to remove it. Slide the axle shaft inward so that the C-lock comes out, then pull out the shaft without harming the shaft bearing or seal. Look for any leaks or damage on the axle shaft seal and check the surface of the axle shaft bearing for brinelling, galling and pitting. Before installing, coat both the bearing and seal pocket with gear lubricant and push the axle shaft into position, inserting it into the seal first, then into the bearing, aligning the shaft and side gear splines without damaging the seal lip. Put one end of the C-lock into the axle shaft and work it outwards so it settles into the side gear. Afterward, insert the pinion shaft into the differential case, set the hole on the shaft and differential case in line and start screwing the lock screw with Loctite (R) until you reach 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.). When finished, set the cover in place, pour in the brake drum and wheel and tire assemblies and add gear lubricant. Lift out the jack support, then drop the vehicle to complete the process.
