To begin servicing the combination switch, remove the negative terminal of the battery while the system is disabled to let the air bag capacitor drain for two minutes. Take out the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel first. If your engine has a tilt steering column, pull the knob located on it straight rearward to separate it from the lever. Under the steering column, take out the outward screws holding the upper and lower parts of the shroud together, then gently press in towards the center of the shroud to pop the snaps and remove it. Next, remove the one central screw holding the lower shroud to the steering column lock housing and take apart the lower shroud. Separate the wires of the multi-function switch wire harness connector, then remove both screws that hold the switch in its housing. Pull the switch control stalk forward, parallel to the edge of the car, to turn it off. Position the multi-function switch on the mounting housing and secure it by putting in and tightening the two screws to 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). Stick the instrument panel connector cable to its place, then fit the lower shroud onto the steering column and turn the center screw until it reaches 2 Nm (20 in. lbs.). End by connecting the upper shroud to the steering column, so that if the vehicle has an automatic transmission, the gearshift lever gap hider sits into the openings on the right side of the two shrouds.
