  Before servicing or repairing axle bearings and seals, ensure the rear Axle Shaft is taken out from the car. Press the locking ring in place, remove Wrench 9279 and finesse the bearing nut loose, noticing that the one on the left rear axle has threading that goes counterclockwise while the nut on the right axle turns clockwise. Put both of the wheel mounting bolts into the axle shaft and anchor it in a vise. Take off the bearing nut and locking ring from the axle shaft and slide Plate 9277 into the space between the rear axle shaft and bearing cover. Firmly press the axle shaft and attached plate into the bearing cover and tapered roller bearings in a press. Elsewhere, unscrew the bearings, pull out the sealing ring, remove the dust shield and hammer the shaft seal out of the cover with a drift. Tidy up the lands around the seal face of the bearing cap before using Installer 9278 to carefully insert the seal into the bearing cover, trying to get it flush with a maximum depth of 3 mm (0.12 inch). Open up the roller bearing and, if needed, replace it; before installing, thoroughly grease the roller bearings. Put on the bearing cover, including the axle shaft seal, a new gasket and the dust shield, then push the tapered roller bearings and race together onto the axle shaft. Replace the locking ring on the axle shaft so its flat side lines up with the nut and the side of the axle shaft. Place the assembly in a press with the axle shaft fitting in Plate 9277. While pressing on the tapered roller bearing, start turning the outside bearing race to avoid damage. Use Wrench 9279 to tighten the bearing nut to 500 Nm (369 ft. lbs.), always reversing it if the nut needs to be placed on the axle in reverse. Pull the locking ring with a hammer and punch grippers to fit it into both grooves in the bearing nut, secure it so the bearing can rotate in any direction and then pop the seal ring on the bearings' groove, complete with installation of the rear axle shaft to finish.

  Install the outer hub bearing cup first, using Installer 9588 and a hammer and then use Bearing Cup Installer 10099 and Universal Drive Handle C-4171 for the inner cup. Coat the bearings inside and out with Multi-purpose grease before fitting the inner wheel bearing. Put a ring of Hylomar SQ 32 M sealant around the circumference of the new seal, just avoiding the felt seals. Use Seal Installer 10098 and Universal Drive Handle C-4171 to put the seal into the hub so that the seal ring sits level with the hub or is no more than 3 mm (0.12 in.) inside the hub. At this stage, put Hylomar SQ 32 M sealant on the ring contact surface and then drive the ABS sensor into place with Tone Ring Installer 10097 and Universal Drive Handle C-4171. First, attach the hub to the axle tube, then the outer hub bearing and only one side of the thrust washer should be used. Put in the inner hub nut and secure it with the Hub Nut Socket 10095 to a torque of 300 Nm (221 ft. lbs.) as you spin the wheel hub. Following the inner nut's turn back, continue to tighten until the washer is just touching the nut and make one extra 1/8 turn. Put in the locking plate after the outer hub nut, tightening the latter to 250 Nm (184 ft. lbs.) with Hub Nut Socket 10095. Afterward, place both Axle Shafts, the Brake Caliper and the support and make sure your parking brakes are adjusted.
