Before starting, first disconnect the negative battery cable and take off the generator and accessory drive belt. Put Special Tool #8823 (VM.1048) into the decoupler and find out if the generator end is hex shaped or splined. For a hex socket set screw, fit socket #8823 with a 10MM depth socket; for a splined set screw, insert one of these 5/16, 6-point or 10MM, 12-point triple square drivers into #8823. Because the threads on the generator shaft are right-hand, loosen the decoupler by turning the tool clockwise and releasing it with your hand. For the Litens decoupler, once more, after disconnecting the negative battery cable, pull out the belt on the generator and accessory drive as well. With the hex end of the generator shaft facing towards you, insert Position Special Tool #833 into the decoupler. First, rotate the tool's end clockwise to break the decoupler loose, then remove it by hand.
