To service and repair the backing plate, first remove the wheel and tire assembly along with the brake drum, then take out the brake shoe assembly. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever by compressing the retainer tabs and pushing the retainer and cable through the support plate. Next, disconnect the brake line at the wheel cylinder and remove the wheel cylinder from the support plate. Remove the axle shaft as detailed in Transmission and Drivetrain, then take out the bolts attaching the support plate to the axle and remove the support plate. For installation, apply a bead of silicone sealer around the axle mounting surface of the support plate and install it on the axle flange, tightening the attaching bolts to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). Apply silicone sealer around the wheel cylinder mounting surface and install the wheel cylinder, followed by the brake line in the wheel cylinder. Install the parking brake cable in the support plate, then reinstall the axle shaft as outlined in Transmission and Drivetrain. Connect the parking brake cable to the lever on the secondary shoe and install the brake shoes on the support plate, adjusting them to the drum with a brake gauge. Finally, install the brake drum and wheel and tire assembly, and bleed the brake system.
