The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is a part of Jeep Cherokee vehicles' fuel management system that controls the amount of fuel necessary for the combustion process in accordance with the current position of the throttle. In digital throttle systems, TPS assists in the modification of the position of the throttle to facilitate easy acceleration and hardness. Some of the TPS types include; the Closed Throttle Position Sensor (CTPS) which shows when the throttle is shut completely. Contemporary TPS contain non-magnetic contactless technologies such as Hall effect or magnetoresistive ones, which seems more reliable and accurate than the potentiometric sensors. It is possible to notice a decline in the general fuel efficiency and performance of your car and this is why early identification of a faulty TPS and its replacement is very important for a vehicle's continuation.

Jeep Cherokee Throttle Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on Jeep Cherokee?
    A:
This sensor is attached to the Throttle Body on any car. First, pull off the cleaner tube on the throttle body, then unhook the electrical connector from the TPS. After that, remove the mounting screws from the TPS and take out the TPS. While installing, make sure the end of the throttle body with the shaft goes into the socket of the TPS, turning a little; if TPS doesn't rotate, flip the throttle body over so the other end with the shaft is positioned in the socket tangs. Rotating the TPS will put a little bit of tension on its parts. Fasten the TPS and its retaining screws with a torque of 7 Nm (60 in. lbs.). Connect the TPS electrical connector, use the throttle manually and check if there is any binding in the TPS before starting the engine. After you're done, fit the air cleaner tube back into the throttle body.
