The Jeep Cherokee Spark Plug creates a spark in the engine cylinder that ignites the fuel and air mixture that has been compressed there to create a combustion that forces the piston down, which powers movement. Encased within a metal threaded shell that is sealed into the cylinder head, the Spark Plug has a central electrode that is held isolated and in spaced relation by a ceramic insulator across a small gap from a side electrode. The ignition coil's high voltage, which can reach thousands of volts, jumps this gap to produce a controllable spark that ignites the combustion each time the piston reaches the top of its compression stroke. In a normal four-stroke engine, the Spark Plug can fire hundreds of times per minute at idle and over a thousand times per minute at cruising speed. The plug does this job reliably for thousands of miles before wear increases the gap and decreases efficiency. The gap size and heat range of this Jeep engine plug allow for smooth operation. Moreover, the Cherokee ignition sequence is reliable as with every Jeep, a single-timed Spark Plug event is triggered in every cylinder. The interval recommended for Jeep Cherokee keeps ignition energy consistent in the due replacement. The Spark Plug gap is important for a Cherokee combustion chamber.

Jeep Cherokee Spark Plug Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service the Spark Plug(s) on this engine on Jeep Cherokee?
    A:
Before servicing the spark plugs which are located underneath the coil rail assembly, spray compressed air around the spark plug hole and the surrounding area to stop foreign material from entering into the combustion chamber. Use a good quality socket with a rubber or foam insert to remove the spark plug. Inspect its condition. Utilize the commercially available spark plug cleaning equipment to clear the plugs and, once they are cleared, use a small point file or jewelers file to file the center electrode flat before setting the gap. Using a wire wheel brush with a motor can create metallic deposits on the spark plug insulator and cause a misfire. Always tighten to 35 - 41 Nm (26 - 30 ft. lbs.) to prevent distortion which could change the spark plug gap or crack the porcelain insulator. When replacing the spark plug and the ignition coil cables, ensure to route the cables correctly and fit the cables into the right retainers to avoid ignition noise, cross ignition of the spark plugs, or short circuiting to ground. Gently initiate the insertion of the spark plug into the cylinder head by hand to avoid cross-threading it. Tighten it up, and then install the coil rail.
