Camshaft, an important component of the Jeep Compass vehicle, assist in controlling the operation of the engine's intake and exhaust valves to allow the entry of the air/fuel mixture for combustions and to expel exhaust gases. Made from cast iron or steel, jeep compass camshaft functions by means of Over Head Valve (OHV), Single Over Head Cam (SOHC), and Double Over Head Cam (DOHC) setup. All impact the performance of the engine in various ways, while DOHC setups provide independence of the intake as well as the exhaust valves resulting in efficiency. Camshafts in Jeep Compass are standard factory camshafts or camshafts whereby performance camshafts aim at enhancing air flow and power. Parameters which include lift, duration and lobe separation angle (LSA) are important when it comes to the determination of the engine RPM range and performance. These parameters can be tweaked to allow owners of Jeep Compass to get better mileage, pulling capacity, or for racing respectively, which just goes to prove the necessity of a camshaft as an ingredient to the customization of a vehicle.

Jeep Compass Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Camshaft on Jeep Compass?
    A:
Let the cam cap have the number one, two or three and only install the correct select fit bearing next. Make sure to oil every cam journal with engine oil and place the new camshaft phaser blades in place before trying any bolts. Then, place the timing chain over the exhaust cam sprocket and line up the marks on both the sprocket and the chain. Put the exhaust camshaft in the cylinder head bearings and line up the timing mark on the camshaft with that on the cylinder head. Move the rear of the intake camshaft up, then guide the sprocket into the chain so the timing marks line up with the chain link before setting the intake camshaft into the engine bearings. Make sure that the marks on the camshafts are lined up and that the marks are parallel with the cylinder head. Don't forget that the front intake and exhaust camshaft bearing cap needs to be installed last to seat the dowels and avoid damaging the engine. If the cap over the front camshaft bearing breaks, the cylinder head should be changed. Attach the bearing caps for the camshafts on the intake and exhaust, tighten them to 11 Nm one by one in the proper order and check that the exhaust bearing shells are properly seated with the dowels in place before you tighten them. Fix the front intake and exhaust bearing cap by tightening bolts to 25 Nm according to the correct order and check that all timing marks match. Take out the allen wrench from the Timing Chain Tensioner and straighten upward on the pull rope to get Locking Wedge 9701 out. Use Mopar thread sealant on the timing tensioner plug and install it, before you install the right splash shield. Make sure there is no Rtv on the cylinder head cover gaskets, then look for damage on them; if they are in good condition, reinstall them. Secure the cylinder head cover, attach the negative Battery Cable, add coolant to the system, add enough oil, start the motor to check for any leaks and put on the engine cover.
  • Q: How to Remove a Camshaft on Jeep Compass?
    A:
You should first take off the engine cover by pulling it upward to remove the camshaft. First, remove the cable from the negative battery terminal and then take out the cylinder head cover. Lift the vehicle as needed and remove the right splash shield's frame cover section. Turn the engine to TDC and make certain the camshaft timing marks are lined up with the cylinder head cover. Mark the chain link in the same place as the timing marks with a paint marker. Pull out the timing tensioner plug on the front cover and use a small allen wrench to raise the ratchet and release tension on it by pushing the wrench toward the cylinder head while the wrench stays inside; continue using the wrench through the rest of the process. Lay Locking Wedge 9701 between the camshaft phasers, slightly press on it, then tap it into the grooves. To avoid harming the camshaft bearing caps, place letters near each hole with a permanent marker or paint and skip using a number stamp or punch. Take off the front camshaft bearing cap and then remove each of the remaining intake and exhaust camshaft bearing cap bolts just a little at a time. Lift the back of the rear camshaft as you turn it to free it from the hole in the front bearing cradle, then lift the timing chain from the sprocket and take out the lower camshaft. Make sure to tie the timing chain in place with wire to protect it from entering the timing chain cover.
