First, if you are changing both sides, install the shoes on each side before doing the final adjustments. Installing the lower return spring (3) and adjuster (5) with the spring between the parking brake shoes (2, 6) comes first. Place the rear shoe with the lever inside, so the adjuster's threaded tip faces left on both sides. Whether it's needed or not, put the strut (1) over the hub and bearing so that the round part points toward the back. Put the assembled brake shoe halves (2, 6), adjuster (5) and lower return spring (3) over the hub and bearing on the support plate and anchor, so that the strut is between the front shoe and the lever on the rear shoe. Begin by linking the
Parking Brake Cable to the lever of the parking brake shoe and after that, attach the brake shoe hold-down springs and pins to their positions (1, 2), twisting the pins by 90° so they are properly connected. Have the front upper return spring (2) support the brake shoe and anchor pin (3) and insert the rear upper return spring (2) behind the rear brake components in a similar way. Insert Brake Shoe Gauge, Special Tool C-3919 into the inside of the parking brake drum and look at the scale. Lay the gauge (2) across the parking brake shoes (1) where they are widest and tighten or loosen the shoes using the adjuster wheel until their linings contact the gauge jaws. Mount the rear brake rotor to the axle (3), then use wheel mounting nuts to guide the back wheel in proper position. Place the rotor so that hole (1) is in front of the rotor at 7 o'clock for the left and 5 o'clock for the right. If you rotate the adjuster wheel (2) up, the adjustment becomes looser and rotated down, it becomes tighter. If you have not applied the pressure compound, now is the time to finish such work through hole 1 by removing the rubber plug. Take out the wheel mounting nuts, finish putting on the brake rotor (3) and carefully assemble any parts at the back you needed to access. Lift the vehicle back up, use the parking brake to confirm it works properly and then lower it again.
