How to service the Output Shaft Seal on 2WD and 4WD transmissions on Jeep Grand Cherokee?

To service the output shaft seal, remove the propeller shaft for 2WD transmissions, move it to the right and secure it. Take off the nut securing the propeller shaft flange to the output shaft and pull off the flange. To remove the 4 W D transmission remove the transfer case and remove the bolts with the transfer case adapter housing to the transmission housing. Then remove the transfer case adapter housing. Remove bolt and take off the output shaft extension, which is mounted on the output shaft. Utilize an appropriate screw plus slide hammer for removal of output shaft seal. Place the new output shaft seal over the output shaft against the transmission case. Use Seal Installer 8902A to install the shaft seal. When using it on a 4WD transmission, reinstall the output shaft extension to the output shaft and bolt it to 200 Nm (148 ft. lbs). Using the bolts, reinstall the transfer case adapter housing to the transmission case. Torque the bolts to 20 Nm (177 inch lbs). Reinstall the transfer case. For 2WD transmissions, the propeller shaft flange must be attached to the output shaft. In addition, a new flange nut must be installed and tightened to 200 Nm (148 ft. lbs.). In conclusion, the Staking Tool 9078 and Driver Handle C4171 are placed onto the output shaft. You will rotate the staking tool until the alignment pin engages the output shaft notch.
