The camshaft used in Jeep Patriot cars is a mechanical encoder which is responsible for the performance of the engine's intake and exhaust valves through controlling the opening and closing of the required valves to allow the air/fuel mixture to enter the cylinder for combustion and outlet of exhaust gases. These configurations possibly include Over Head Valve (OHV), Single Over Head Cam (SOHC), and Double Over Head Cam (DOHC) and is usually made of iron or steel, Jeep Patriot camshaft. Each affects the engine in a different manner, DOHC lets intake and exhaust be controlled independently thus making it efficient. Jeep Patriot camshafts are typically, factory or rebuilt, or performance ones which are built with the specific aim of achieving the set target performance levels. Some of these specifications include lift, duration, and the lobe separation angle also abbreviated as LSA play an essential role in defining the effect of the camshaft on the behaviour of the engine regarding torque and idle. Therefore the camshaft plays the key role in timing the operations of the valves per the momenta of the pistons and is a key determinant of the performance of the Jeep Patriot.

Jeep Patriot Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Camshaft on Jeep Patriot?
    A:
Before you set the camshaft, make sure the cam cap is labeled one, two or three, as it shows which bearing to use in your transmission, then fit the proper bearing. Work a clean amount of engine oil onto the camshaft journals and, if you have separated the parts, insert the camshaft phasers and put the dowel in its correct position before hand-tightening the camshaft phaser bolt. After that, mount the timing chain onto the exhaust cam sprocket using the marks, slide the chain until those marks line up with the already-painted chain link and make sure the exhaust camshaft is resting on the bearing journals in the cylinder head with the exhaust cam timing mark matching the one in the cylinder head. Turn the rear of the intake camshaft up and fit the sprocket to the chain so the timing marks align on the sprocket with the painted chain link, then lock the intake camshaft into the journal holding them. Make sure that between the two camshafts, the timing marks are lined up and that the marks are running parallel to the cylinder head. Install the bearing cap for the front intake and exhaust camshafts after all else, align the dowels and follow the directions to prevent problems with the engine. If the front camshaft bearing cap fails, the cylinder head has to be changed. After fitting the intake and exhaust bearing caps on the camshafts, slowing tighten the bolts to 11 Nm in the right sequence and confirm that download shells are situated correctly and installed. Install the front intake and exhaust bearing cap after tightening the bolts with 25 Nm, following the correct sequencing and ensure every timing mark is aligned. Take out the Allen wrench from the Timing Chain Tensioner and pull the tug wire upwards to take out Locking Wedge 9701. Work Mopar thread sealant onto the timing tensioner plug, then ensure the splash shield is also on. Wash any Rtv from the cylinder head cover gasket and review the gaskets for damage; when undamaged, put everything back together and reassemble the cylinder head cover. Attach the negative cable from the battery, pour oil and coolant into the engine, start the vehicle, look for leaks and install the engine cover last.
  • Q: How to Remove a Camshaft on Jeep Patriot?
    A:
Pull the engine cover up, then unplug the negative Battery Cable as the next step. After that, separate the electrical connectors of the coil and remove the cover from the cylinder head. Lift the vehicle and take off the splash shield from the right side. Bring the engine to TDC and look at the camshaft timing marks to make sure they match each other. With a paint marker, mark the part of the chain where the timing marks indicate. Get rid of the timing tensioner plug from the front cover, then insert an Allen wrench at the plug hole, lift the ratchet up and remove the tensioner as you keep the Allen wrench in place. Look at the camshaft timing marks and put marks near each of the timing marks on the sprockets, along with the matching chain links. Place Locking Wedge 9701 between the camshaft phasers and tap it until it stays firmly in place. Take off the front camshaft bearing cap and use a slow rotation to unscrew each bolt when removing the rest of the bearing caps. Move the rear to raise the intake camshaft and turn it as you move it out from the front cradle. Take the timing chain off its sprocket and then remove the exhaust camshaft. Use wire to secure the timing chain so it isn't able to drop into the timing chain cover.
