To remove the rear output shaft seal, first shift the transmission and transfer case into Neutral, then raise and support the vehicle. Mark a line across the pinion shaft and at each end of the propeller shaft for installation reference. Remove the U-joint strap bolts at the pinion shaft yoke and pry open the clamp holding the dust boot to the propeller shaft yoke. Slide the slip yoke off the transmission/transfer case output shaft and remove the propeller shaft. Spread the band clamp holding the output shaft boot to the output shaft slinger or output shaft damper with a suitable awl. Remove the output shaft boot from the slinger or output shaft damper. If the vehicle lacks an output shaft damper, use Puller MD-998056-A to remove the output shaft rear slinger. If equipped with an output shaft damper, use Screws 8421 along with the puller yoke and forcing screw from a bolt-grip puller set to remove the transfer case output shaft damper. Use a suitable pry tool or a slide hammer mounted screw to remove the seal from the rear retainer. For installation, apply a liberal quantity of petroleum jelly to the new rear seal and the output shaft to protect the seal lips during installation. Slide the seal onto Seal Protector 6992 and then onto the output shaft. Use Installer C-4076-B with Handle MD-998323 to drive the seal into the rear bearing retainer. If the vehicle is not equipped with an output shaft damper, install a new output shaft rear slinger with Installer 8408. For vehicles with an output shaft damper, position the damper weight on the output shaft, ensuring it is square to the shaft, then use Installer 8422 to properly position the damper. Install the boot on the output shaft slinger or output shaft damper and crimp the retaining clamp with tool C-4975-A. Slide the slip yoke onto the transmission/transfer case output shaft, align the installation reference marks at the axle yoke, and install the propeller shaft. Tighten the U-joint strap/clamp bolts at the axle yoke to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.) and crimp the clamp with Clamp Tool C-4975A to secure the dust boot to the propeller shaft yoke before removing support and lowering the vehicle.
