Jeep Wrangler Starter units convert battery electricity into mechanical rotation which cranks the engine. The high-strength wiring in the compact housing supplies an external-mounted solenoid directly from the battery. Once the ignition key is turned to START, the Jeep Wrangler Starter solenoid shuts off the circuit and energizes field coils or permanent magnets around a rotating armature. The electromagnetic force spins the armature which turns a pinion gear that meshes with the engine flywheel or flexplate, and which spins the crankshaft until combustion starts. Once the engine is operating, an overrunning clutch then disengages the drive to avoid damage. Some designs employ a gear reduction configuration, with a reduction gear between armature and drive pinion which increases torque while maintaining a compact size for the Starter. The Starter has a relay and safety switch in the control path to prevent engagement unless the Wrangler transmission is in neutral or the clutch is depressed (on manual transmissions). After that, insert the Battery Cable eyelet onto the starter solenoid stud and fasten nut 1 according to the directions for tightening. Put the starter motor on the transmission and fasten it with the two mounting bolts 2 following the required torque instructions. Following that, return the car to the ground and hook up the negative battery cable.
- Q: How to Service and Repair a Starter Motor on Jeep Wrangler?A:Disconnect and isolate the negative Battery Cable at the beginning and next raise and secure the vehicle with proper support. As you hold the starter motor steady, undo the bolts that fix it to the engine block. Carefully get the bottom of the starter motor low enough and then access and take off the nut fastening the positive battery cable terminal to the starter solenoid B(+) terminal. Loosely attach the starting motor to the engine block, use a couple of shims to hold it in place and be aware that they come in 0.381 mm (0.015 in.) thicknesses. After tightening both mounting bolts to 44.7 Nm (33 ft. lbs.), lower the vehicle and attach the battery's negative cable.
