2000 Dodge Dakota Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Alternator on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: The first thing to do when servicing the alternator is to remove the negative battery cable to avoid harming the electrical system. Remove the belt from the generator's drive, then take out the generator's pivot and bolts or nut to reach the wire connectors. Remove the rear B(+) mounting nut and disconnect the terminal at that end of the generator. Then, push on the connector tab to unhook the field wire, pull it from the generator and take the generator out of your car. Before installation, slide the generator onto the engine and then connect the field wire into the obvious place in the back of the generator. Connect the B(+) terminal to the generator mounting stud and turn the nut until it is tight to a torque rating of 8.5 Nm (75 in. lbs.). Use the generator mounting fasteners and tighten the generator mounting bolt to 55 Nm and the generator pivot bolt to 55 Nm of torque. Don't use a screwdriver to place the belt over the pulley rim and double-check that the accessory drive belt runs correctly on the serpentine to avoid water pump rotation in the wrong way and possible engine overheating. Once the engine is installed, put the generator drive belt in place, snap the cable protector over the B(+) mounting stud and reattach the negative battery cable.
