2000 Dodge Dakota CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a CV Boot on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: To work on the Constant Velocity Joint Boot, first remove the driveshaft from the vehicle and afterward the C/V joint outside it. Now, undo the small outer C/V joint clamp and pull off the boot and afterwards unbolt the bolts holding both inner C/V joint boots and quickly drag the boots off. Check that there are differences in required lubricant for inner and outer C/V joints, so use only the recommended amount for each. Get rid of all dirt and old grease on the C/V joints and shaft. Hold the C/V joint lip at the lower end with the shaft, then slide the boot up it. Place the smaller end of the boot into a ladder-type clamp in the boot groove and slide it onto the intermediate shaft till the boot and lip fit correctly. Then secure the clamp by moving the tabs into the slots. Use Remover/Installer C-4124 to let out air from inside the clamp bridge, but do not break the clamp bridge or damage the boot. Slot the large-diameter side of the boot onto the C/V joint housing. (For electric installations) Once the small clamp is in place above the inner joint boot, force the inboard hub towards the rear of the hub housing, then use a small blunt drift to loosen the pressure, so that the distance between the lip and the flange is 181.00 mm (7.13 inch), to stop the boot from ballooning and getting damaged. Also, confirm the boot is straight and properly seated in the housing before putting on the large clamp as explained for the small clamps. Place the small clamp around the end of the shaft, place the outer C/V joint boot over the shaft and push them all together. Put on the big boot clamp on the outward C/V joint, attach the outward C/V joint to the shaft and finally fasten the big spring to the shaft and C/V joint before putting back the C/V driveshaft.
