2000 Dodge Dakota Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on a Conventional Fixed or Floating Axle on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: To start with, raise and support the car, putting the gearbox in neutral when using a fixed or floating axle. Begin by taking out the wheel assembly, then the brake drum by doing it the proper way. First, clean away anything that isn't supposed to be there from the housing cover, then free the housing cover bolts to allow the oil to drain out from the housing and the axle tubes as you remove the housing cover. Turn the differential case so you can reach the pinion mate shaft lock screw on the other side, then unscrew it and remove the pinion mate shaft from the case. Lightly press the axle shaft to release the axle shaft C-lock from the axle and remove the shaft with care so you don't damage the axle shaft bearing and seal inside the tube. Inspect the axle seal for leaks or damage and examine the bearing contact spot on the axle shaft for brinelling, galling or pitting; if anything is found, exchange the axle shaft, bearing and seal, as needed. Put some gear lubricant on the lip and bore of the brand new bearing, feed the axle through the seal and bearing and engage it with the splines of the side gears, not damaging the seal lip. Push the C-lock into the end of the axle shaft and fit it into the side gear by pushing it outward. Then slide the pinion shaft into the differential case while the thrust washers and differential pinions hold them in place, position the shaft hole beside the case hole and secure it with a lock screw coated in Loctite to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.). Install the brake cover, add the fluid using the needed procedure and also use the proper procedures to put on the brake drum. After that, add the wheel and tire and then you can finish by lowering the vehicle.
