2000 Dodge Dakota Muffler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service or Replace a Muffler on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: Any time you service or change the exhaust system, disconnect the oxygen sensor connector(s) to prevent harm to the wiring and sensor. Raise the vehicle and work on it once it's up, spraying Mopar Rust Penetrant on the clamp nuts and letting it sit for 5 minutes before proceeding. Loose the nuts from the muffler clamp at the front hanger and muffler to tailpipe under the car. Untie the muffler from the tailpipe, providing support under the tailpipe. After that, unhook the muffler from the extension pipe or catalytic converter flange. If you have taken off the 3.9L/5.9L upper front muffler support, install the bolts into the frame and fix them with 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.) torque so that the insulators slide over the ends of both hangers. Attach the muffler to the extension pipe or catalytic converter flange, fix the clamp over the nut and tighten it by hand. Secure the tail pipe into the back of the muffler and tighten the nuts on both hangers to range between 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and 46 Nm (34 ft. lbs.). After lowering the car, start the engine, check for leaks in the exhaust and any places where the two are touching and make any adjustments to the alignment.
