2000 Dodge Dakota Oil Pan Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Oil Pan on 2000 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before servicing or repairing the oil pan, disconnect the battery's negative cable and jack up your car. With the drain plug removed, drain the engine and after that, cut the exhaust pipe from the engine's manifold and remove the exhaust hanger at the catalytic converter to bring down the exhaust pipe. Unscrew and pull out the engine starter motor and the flywheel/torque converter housing access cover. Bring a jack stand under the engine vibration damper, resting it on a 2 x 2 wood, remove the mounting bolts for the engine and raise the engine so there is space to take out the bottom of the oil pan. Equipped, withdraw the transmission cooler lines and oxygen sensor harness from the studs in the oil pan. Take off all the bolts and studs connecting the oil pan to the engine and carefully lift the oil pan up and remove the gasket. Wash the block and pan gasket surfaces and then artess your four alignment dowels from 1/4 x 1 1/2 bolts by sawing the head and drilling a slot in each one for installation. Fit dowels into the timing case cover and add the other two to the cylinder block. Dab Mopar Silicone Adhesive Sealant at each of the four places around the cylinder block and then fix the gasket over the dowels to the block and cover of the timing case. Place the oil pan between the dowels and the gasket, put in the 1/4 inch and 5/16 inch bolts, tighten the 1/4 inch to 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.) and the 5/16 inch to 15 Nm (132 in. lbs.). Take out the dowels, set in the remaining 1/4 inch oil pan bolts and tighten them to 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.). Set the engine down on the engine mounts, attach the through bolts and tighten the nuts, after which you may lower the stand and remove the piece of wood. After that, reinstall the flywheel and the torque converter housing access cover and then the engine starter motor. Attach the exhaust pipe to the hanger and to the engine exhaust manifold. After that, insert and tighten the oil pan drain plug to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) torque. Drop the car to the ground, attach the negative connector to the battery and fill the engine oil to the recommended mark on the oil pan. While the engine is on, be sure to stay away from the fan, avoid touching the belts and pulleys, don't stand in the fan's path and avoid wearing loose clothes. After completing the steps, start up the engine and check for leaks.
