2000 Dodge Durango Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Belt Tensioner on 2000 Dodge Durango?
A: Remove the accessory drive belt just before servicing the drive belt tensioner. Cut the power and secondary wires from the ignition coil, then undo the two bolts to pull the ignition coil from the mounting points on the engine. Once you've removed the bracket, take out the mounting bolt to break the tensioner assembly loose from the engine. Since spring pressure is high, do not take apart the automatic tensioner, as it's serviced as one unit, apart from the pulley. Take the bolt holding the pulley in place and then remove the pulley from the tensioner. First, attach the pulley and its bolt to the tensioner, then tighten the bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) during installation. Install the tensioner assembly and mounting screw, but first tighten the screw to 67 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Remake all electrical connections to the ignition coil and afterward, place the coil under the tensioner assembly, using the mounting screws to attach it at 11 Nm (100 in. lbs.) to save the coil case from damage. The last step is to mount the accessory drive belt.
