2000 Dodge Durango Drive Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Drive Belt on 5.2L/5.9L Engines with a Spring-Loaded Automatic Belt Tensioner on 2000 Dodge Durango?
A: All belt setups, with or without power steering or air conditioning, make use of the automatic spring-loaded belt tensioner for 5.2L/5.9L engines. To help remove the drive belt, grab a socket/wrench and attach it to the pulley bolt on the automatic tensioner. Turn the tensioner clockwise until the tension on the belt is gone. Start with the belt off the idler pulley, then remove it from the vehicle. When installing anything, guide the serpentine accessory drive belt properly to avoid the engine overheating as a result of the water pump turning backward. Over all the pulleys except the idler pulley, placed between the generator and A/C compressor, fit the drive belt. Again, tighten the pulley mounting bolt of the automatic tensioner with a socket/wrench while turning clockwise, put the belt around the idler pulley and leave it until it returns to its spot. Pull out the wrench and make sure the belt is properly aligned between all pulleys. Look at the marks on the side of the belt, making sure the arrow on the tensioner back is within 3 mm (1/8 inch) of them. Belt usage for 15 minutes or less makes it considered new. If everything does not fit, confirm the correct belt is being used, check on bearing wear in the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator, if any pulleys are not secure, ensure accessories are aligned correctly together and verify that the belt is installed exactly as designed.
