2000 Dodge Durango Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can a Water Pump Be Replaced Without Discharging the Air Conditioning System on 2000 Dodge Durango?
A: You don't have to let out the air conditioning system to take out or install the water pump if the vehicle has that feature. Disconnect the cable from the battery's negative terminal, let the coolant drain out and transfer it to a clean container. Use only the right tool for these hose clamps such as number 6094 or HPC-20, while keeping safety glasses on. If you need new constant tension clamps, always use the original clamps with the same letters or numbers. Loosen and remove the clamp and hose that go to the radiator at the upper part of the radiator. Then, to take out the thermal viscous fan drive from the water pump hub shaft, loosen the mounting nut counterclockwise and hold the fan shaft with Snap-On 36 MM fan wrench (number SP346) and special tool 6958 spanner wrench. If the water pump needs to be replaced, ensure the fan blade assembly isn't unbolted from the thermal viscous fan drive. Unscrew the attaching hardware under the fan shroud and then pull the fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly out together. Don't set the thermal viscous fan drive flat to prevent silicone fluid from affecting it. With tension removed from the autotensioner, pull off the accessory drive belt, then take off the lower radiator hose and heater hose from the return tube of the heater hose. Work the bolt loose and throw away the old O-ring on the heater hose coolant return tube. Unfasten the seven water pump bolts, remove the clamp at the water pump's side of the bypass hose and slide the hose off the pump without the old gasket. Make sure the surfaces on the gasket are clean before fitting the new water pump with a new gasket, insert the water pump nipple into the bypass hose and fasten the mounting bolts tightly to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque. Slide the bypass hose clamp in place, rotate the water pump so the impeller doesn't contact the timing chain case/cover and also install a new O-ring on the heater hose coolant return tube, covered with antifreeze. Put the coolant return tube back in place, screw on the mounting bolt, join the lower radiator hose to the water pump and fasten the heater hose on the tube using a clamp. Loose up the tension on the belt tensioner and fit the accessory drive belt in the right way so that the engine doesn't heat up. Put the fan shroud and fan blade/viscous fan drive unit together, connect the fan shroud and link the fan assembly to the shaft on the water pump. Fill the coolant once more, secure the negative battery cable, turn the vehicle on and look for any leaks.
