2000 Dodge Durango Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Chain on 2000 Dodge Durango?
A: You should begin by disconnecting the battery's negative cable before handling the timing chain service. With the right procedure, remove the Timing Chain Cover. After inserting the bolt for the vibration damper by hand, us a breaker bar and suitable socket to turn the crankshaft until the timing marks line up. After that, unscrew the bolts holding in the camshaft sprocket and take out the timing chain, the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets together. While installing, let both camshaft and crankshaft sprockets sit on the bench with their timing marks lined up on the same imaginary center line and through the corresponding bores. Ease the timing chain behind both sprockets, turn the crankshaft and camshaft and align them in the keyway locations of the sprockets. Pick up the chain and sprockets together, holding them carefully against the chain and slide both sprockets so they lie evenly on their shafts. After that, check the alignment of the timing marks using a straightedge. Lift the camshaft and add the bolt which should be tightened to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) by hand. That same camshaft end play should be between 0.051 and 0.152 mm (0.002 and 0.006 inch) with a new thrust plate and up to 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) with a used one; if it is not within these boundaries, put in a new thrust plate. Cover the timing chain with a timing chain cover which is the last step.
