2000 Dodge Intrepid Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Can the Water Pump Be Replaced Without Discharging the Air Conditioning System on 2000 Dodge Intrepid?
A: You don't have to release the air conditioning to replace the water pump in any model. It's common for the water pump to leak a small amount of coolant from the weep hole, shown by a black mark at the weep hole; however, a large or continual flow of coolant in this area points to a seal problem and the water pump must be replaced after a complete check. The first step is to drain out the coolant in the cooling system. After that, take out the upper radiator crossmember, the fan module and the accessory and air conditioning belts, as the water pump relies on the primary timing chain. Next, remove both crankshaft damper and timing chain cover, the primary timing chain and all chain guides. Following that, take out the bolts holding the water pump to the block, then the water pump and the gasket. To install, wipe off the places where the water pump will seal, add the new pump and gasket, secure the bolts to 12 Nm or 105 inch lbs. Once all the necessary loose parts are in place, you should then install the timing chain guides, timing chain, timing chain cover and crankshaft damper and finish with the accessory drive belts, fan module and upper radiator crossmember. In the end, add the cooling system's fluid.
